چکیده

Kawamura and Cook have developed a framework for studying the computability and complexity theoretic problems over “large” topological spaces. This framework has been applied to study the complexity of the differential operator and the complexity of functionals over the space of continuous functions on the unit interval C[0, 1]. In this paper we apply the ideas of Kawamura and Cook to the product space of the real numbers endowed with the product topology. We show that no computable norm can be defined over such topology. We investigate computability and complexity of total functions over the product space in two cases: (1) when the computing machine submits a uniformally bounded number of queries to the oracle and (2) when the number of queries submitted by the machine is not uniformally bounded. In the first case we show that the function over the product space can be reduced to a function over a finite-dimensional space. However, in general there exists functions whose computing machines must submit a non-uniform number of queries to the oracle indicating that computing over the product topology can not in general be reduced to computing over finite-dimensional spaces. keywoeds: computable analysis, second-order complexity theory, product topology, oracle Turing machine

Polynomial time computable real functions

In this paper, we study computability and complexity of real functions. We extend these notions, already defined for functions over closed intervals or over the real line to functions over particular real open sets and give some results and characterizations, especially for polynomial time computable functions. Our representation of real numbers as sequences of rational numbers allows us to imp...

A Functional Approach to Computability on Real Numbers

The aim of this thesis is to contribute to close the gap existing between the theory of computable analysis and actual computation. In order to study computability over real numbers we use several tools peculiar to the theory of programming languages. In particular we introduce a special kind of typed lambda calculus as an appropriate formalism for describing computations on real numbers. Furth...

Towards a real Real RAM: a Prototype using C++

The theory of computability and complexity on the field of real numbers is already well developed, see e.g. [Ko91, We95]. On the other hand, the reality of computing with reals is still tied to the old concept of single and double precision approximations. Improvements like [Br78] did not find widespread usage, whereas newer approaches like [Kl93] are not satisfying at least from the viewpoint ...

A Two-Layer Approach to the Computability and Complexity of Real Numbers

We present a new approach to computability of real numbers in which real functions have type-1 representations, which also includes the ability to reason about the complexity of real numbers and functions. We discuss how this allows efficient implementations of exact real numbers and also present a new real number system that is based on it.

Kolmogorov Complexity Theory over the Reals

Kolmogorov Complexity constitutes an integral part of computability theory, information theory, and computational complexity theory— in the discrete setting of bits and Turing machines. Over real numbers, on the other hand, the BSS-machine (aka real-RAM) has been established as a major model of computation. This real realm has turned out to exhibit natural counterparts to many notions and resul...
